Waiting Period Is On!
Durban – The cream of South African surfing is represented in the 32 surfers selected for the 2010 Quiksilver Goodwave. From Cape Town to Durban and everywhere in between, the best surfers have been invited to surf in this the most popular surfing contest in the country. This is the seventh edition of the event and looks set to be the most exciting one so far. The beaches in Durban have changed dramatically with the dredging of the sand from the harbour mouth, and new waves have started forming. The contest venue has thus changed accordingly and The Balmoral Bank, The Bay Of Plenty and North Beach all join New Pier as possible venues.
The Quiksilver Goodwave is an invite-only event that takes place on one cooking day of surfing in Durban. The surfers who were selected for the event needed to have a combination of skills. Surfers who were selected for the event needed to be able to charge when the surf gets solid and barreling, but also needed to have the ability to throw in some big turns when the waves get a bit more rippable. Surfers invited to this edition of the event include previous winners Llewellyn Whitaker, Warwick Wright, Shane Thorne, Simon Nicholson and Antonio Bortoletto. Perennial ripper Frankie Oberholzer is in the mix, along with chargers Grant Baker, Paul Canning and Jason Ribbink. The young crew are represented by surfers like Shaun Joubert, Beyrick De Vries, Matt Bromley and Chris Leppan. Pro campaigners Davey Weare, Royden Bryson, Rudy Palmboom Jnr and Brandon Jackson are also on the list, which includes Sean Holmes from Cape Town, Devyn Mattheys from East London and Dale Staples from St Francis. For a full list of 32 invited surfers and 35 alternates check out the website www.goodwave.co.za.
“It’s really good to be invited into the event,” said young Kommetjie charger Matt Bromley. “I hope that the epic Cape summer barrels we’ve been having hold me in good stead for some throating New Pier.”
This year the website www.goodwave.co.za has been revamped and has a new look and feel, and a number of new features. There is the Wavescape Ocean Watch feature on the site, as well as a sign-up where you can register for email or sms alerts as to when the event is going to run. Spike is the official surf forecaster for the event
The event has a prize pool of R100,000, with R65,000 going to the winner. Every surfer who is selected and who competes in the event will win prize money. The entrance fee is still R1, payable on the day. Jet ski’s will be utilised to transport contestants out to the line-up during the event. There will also be a 4-man heat of 30 minutes format, top two waves counting, and two going through per heat. The waiting period is the entire 11 months, from beginning February through to end December of 2010.
The 2010 Quiksilver Goodwave invitees were selected by Quiksilver with the help of Zigzag magazine’s Will Bendix, the BOMBsurf magazine’s John McCarthy and surf journalist Craig Jarvis.
