Kelly Slater To Head A Star-Studded Signing at the Quiksilver Mega Store, J-Bay.
Jeffrey’s Bay – Nine times ASP world champion Kelly Slater will be in attendance for a signing, along with some of the best surfers in the world from the Quiksilver international surf team. Dane Reynolds (USA), Fred Patacchia (Hawaii), Jeremy Flores (France) and local surfer Travis Logie from Durban will join the best surfer in the history of the sport for an evening of autograph signing at Quiksilver’s mega store in J-Bay.

Kelly Slater
While Kelly needs no introduction as the nine-time world champion, team mate Dane Reynolds has risen to the top of the sport for his outrageous new school competitive surfing and is the current favourite surfer of groms the world over. Fred Pattachia or ‘Freddy P’ as he is affectionately known, is a perennial stand-out at World Tour events and is always a surfer to watch on his backhand at Supertubes, Jeffrey’s Bay. Jeremy Flores was a child wonder who has transformed into an explosive and focused professional surfer with some massive signature moves, while Travis Logie must be one of the quickest professional surfers to ever stand on a board. Travis is one of the most accomplished South African professional surfers and also enjoys incredible popularity when at home as a result of his easy-going and friendly nature, as well as great coverage in South Africa surf and mainstream media.
Kelly Slater has his mind set on a 10th world title, and at this stage of the game is leading the rankings coming into the Billabong Pro. A victory in Jeffrey’s Bay will see him solidify that lead and put him within grasp of this unprecedented world title. Kelly Slater’s place in the history annals of professional surfing is assured, but there is a very real possibility that should he secure his 10th title he might not be back next year, which means that this could be one of the last times to meet him in person and get his signature.
There will be signed posters and sticker giveaways on the night, as well as 50% off all clothing, accessories and footwear in the store. There will be a skate demo by some of the region’s top skaters in the skate bowl that resides inside the store, and there will also be top shapers shaping new surfboards in the store’s dedicated indoor shaping bay.
The signing is set for Saturday 17 July at 18:00 at the Quiksilver Mega Store in the Fountains Mall, Jeffrey’s Bay.

Big Wave Surfing in Chile, Roxy Invitational in Mozambique & Beyrick de Vries All on Boardriders TV
This show brings you a host of surfing action from all over the globe. To open show 5 we bring you a profile on up-and-coming ripper Beyrick de Vries. The Umhlanga resident has recently been turning some heads with his innovative and attractive surfing as well as his impressive results in some big international events. We sit him down and get him to shed some light on how he sees surfing and the direction his career in surfing will be taking. The footage of Beyrick in this show reveals why he has been so highly spoken of and how he managed 4th place in the ISA World Championships along with many other premature results.
The Quiksilver Ceremonial 2010 recently went down in the giant surf of PUNTA DE LOBOS, Chile. Defending champion Grant ‘Twiggy” Baker was unable to repeat his 2009 efforts and it was local hero Christian Merello who eventually stole the show in the growing swell to claim the US$ 30,000 first place prize. Well-known big wave chargers Mark Healey, Peter Mel, Greg Long and Jamie Sterling were all part of the star-studded invite list.
Lastly, we head deep into Mozambique for the annual Roxy Invitational presented by Saltwater GIRL Magazine. Seven of SA’s best were selected along with two Australians and one competitor from Reunion Island to compete for R15 000 and the Roxy Invitational title. Sarah Baum managed to take home the gold ahead of fellow Durbanite Kirsty Delport and Cape Town’s Taryn Chudleigh. Australian’s Philippa Anderson and Paige Haggerston were impressive in the earlier rounds but were silenced by the determined South African competition. Catch all the surf action and lifestyle at this year’s event at the new exotic location.

Australia’s Julian Wilson wins SriLankan Airlines Pro at Arugam Bay
Sri Lanka’s first ever ASP event hailed an outstanding success!
Arugam Bay Sri Lanka:Australia’s Julian Wilson has won the 6 star rated Association of Surfing Professionals SriLankan Airlines Pro in flawless 4 to 6 feet surf on an epic final day.
Wilson came into this event courtesy of a wild-card from the sponsor and throughout the event he dominated, continually posting the day’s highest scoring rides and took a deserved win over 19 year-old USA surfer Nat Young.
Wilson and Young were unquestionably the worthy finalists here as both verified their status as two of the most exciting emerging ASP surfers.
Wilson controlled the final from start to finish and capitalised early by taking wave priority when Young took off on a poor opening wave.
By mid-final Wilson had a solid lead and Young faulted slightly going for some gigantic floating re entry moves that never quite came off while Wilson continued to build on his lead scoring a 7.4 ride late in the final which left Young chasing an outstanding 9 point ride to bridge the gap.
While everyone knew Young was capable of such a score with only five minutes remaining finding the wave that could deliver the score became Young’s task which he could not complete.
“I can’t believe what an outstanding event this has been for me and all the surfers who have travelled here” said 22 year-old Wilson after his win.
“The waves have been outstanding everyday and in many ways they are similar to the point waves around Noosa where I live – but probably way more consistent.”
“I’m back and over my injuries and seriously looking hard at the qualifying series – this result is ideal for me and I’ll head to California for the US Open full of confidence.”
It was both Wilson and Young’s best ever performance at ASP level and both look ready to seriously challenge the highest ranks of surfing.
“I’ve had an amazing week here and I’m really greatful to have made the final” said Young.
“I knew the only way to beat Julian would be to score two excellent waves in that final – he’s been the stand-out all week – I went for the win but came unstuck on a few critical moves but I’m really pleased with this result.”
Both semi finals were incredibly close affairs today with Wilson defeating Drew Courtney by catching an 8.5 ride in the last minutes while Nat Young posted an outstanding 9.33 near the end of his semi final to edge out Australia’s Jayke Sharpe.
Arugam Bay saved it’s best to the last day here and delivered amazing conditions with clean long lined waves reeling across this ideal point break set-up and delivered both chargeable sections and barrels and the surfers simply revelled in the perfection.
The event was outstanding overall and all in attendance agreed another magnificent venue had been added to the ASP surfing tour and all look forward to next year.

Sweltering Heat and Hot Surfing For Day Two Of The Quiksilver Pro Junior Presented By Durban And Resolution
by Quiksilver Media on Apr.03, 2010, under News, Surf
North Beach, Durban – With the temperature soaring by nine o’clock in the morning, the day was set for some blistering heats at the Quiksilver Pro Junior at North Beach in Durban. The surfing kicked off with the Pro Junior Boys round of 32, and the country’s best surfers got to business in the three-foot peaks. First heat of the day saw Dale Staples from St Francis Bay win convincingly, surfing against Devin Lane (2nd), brother Dane Staples in third and Kane Bennewith in 4th position. Shaun Joubert from Mossel Bay was on form to win the second heat, and Durban local Shawn Dennis carved his way to victory in the third heat. Other surfers to impress with heat victories were Chad Du Toit from Durban, event favourite Beyrick De Vries from Umhlanga, and Matthew Bromley from Cape Town. The lanky Bromley, from Kommetjie in the Cape, found his rhythm amongst the right-handers to get the best two waves of the heat. “I started off with a nice wave and did a couple of turns on the outside,” said Bromley. “The judges gave me 6 points for it, and I paddled straight back out and onto the inside. Then I waited awhile as I knew that I needed a good score and that there were still some good waves coming through. When I got my second wave it just formed up so nicely on the inside and I was able to do a whole bunch of turns and scored a 7.5, so I was pretty stoked.”

Event favourite from Umhlanga, Beyrick De Vries advanced through day two of the Quiksilver Pro Junior.
The Quiksilver King Of The Groms U16 round of 16 was next in the water, and as the light easterly started puffing over the waves these young surfers started started pushing their surfing to the limits. Standouts in the U16’s included the Jbay duo of Dylan Lightfoot and Steven Sawyer, as well as Justin Sykes from the KZN north coast. Then it was straight into the Quiksilver King Of the Groms U14 Boys semi finals, with Kommetjie’s Max Armstrong along with Jason Harris going through to the finals from the first semi, and Benji Brand and Shane Sykes advancing from the second semi.
The final round of the day was the Pro Junior Boys round of 16. Shaun Joubert from from Mossel Bay started off strong and blitzed his heat, pushing rival Dale Staples into second. “I had just picked up a decent wave and scored 5.15, which I was happy with,” said Joubert. “I was paddling back out and I was paddling wide when a bigger set broke way on the outside. It formed up exactly where I was and I caught it, did two turns on the outside before pulling off an air on the inside. The conditions aren’t the best, but there are plenty of waves and opportunities, and everyone gets a chance out there. ”
Durban local Chad Du Toit also had a good heat, winning comfortably over Devin Lane and Bertie Stuurman. “I didn’t even get a good one in the heat,” said Chad on the beach afterwards. “I just hooked into an average one, and it opened up on the inside and I punted a double-grab and made it. The judges gave me a 6, and with my second wave a 5.15 I got the win so I’m stoked. There’s not too many good ones, but tomorrow we will be surfing man-on-man heats so hopefully there will be a bit more space and I’ll find some good ones and get a few air sections.”
All eyes were then on Beyrick De Vries, who has been highly touted to win this event, but it was Jbay’s Dylan Lightfoot who turned the tables on the Umhlanga surfer and took the heat victory on his last wave. Lightfoot has been performing well all event, and picked up two good waves in what can only be described as a wave-starved heat, but De Vries still advanced in second place and will now be even more determined for a big result tomorrow.

Tomorrow will see the final day of surfing in the Quiksilver Pro Junior, starting off at 8:30 in the morning. The three finals and the Resolution Expression Session will get underway around 12 o’clock midday, and there will be an awards ceremony at 2:00pm.
Lucky no. 13

Well the years finally over and i have requalified for the WCT !!!!!!
Hawaii was really nerve racking , both events didnt go well at all for me , but it was pretty much the same story for all the guys just behind me on the ratings.
In the end i only dropped 2 spots down to 13th which means im in !!!!!!!!
Super stoked, a long hard year of training and traveling has finally paid off and made everything worthwhile.
Since ive been back home ive actually been surfing my brains out , theres been the craziest bank at dairy caus of the piers getting filled up. It also looks like they gonna start pumping sand out of some new pipes the have put through the piers which is really exciting .
Theres a benefit event for former SA pro surfer Heather Clark on the 19th of Dec , she had a really bad car accident recently and all the proceeds go towards helping Heather with her medical costs. So everyone please come down to bronze beach and show some support!!!
cheers
Trav.
1 MORE TO GO
by Travis Logie on Nov.27, 2009, under General, Surf
the waiting period for sunset is well underway, there seems to be some good swell on the way so we should be up and running pretty soon!
my last heat at Haliewa was really heavy, in half hour heat there was one set in the last minute , we all got a wave and then the heat finished, i lost needing a 1.24 !!!! the lowest score ive ever lost by in my career, and if i had made that heat i would be in for next year!
but theres still one more event and no-one really overtook me, so things are still looking really good! same thing though if i get through a heat in this one i should be golden , hoping for a big result though to end off an exhausting but awesome year.
jacko, rudy and myself have been putting in the hours at sunset every day and the waves have been about in the eight foot range and windy but fun. so we are ready for action.
cheers travis logie
