lacanau ocean

by Michael February on Aug.19, 2010, under General

hey everyone
After a week of speaking broken english i am finally reunited with all the South African boys in Lacanau.
Haven’t surfed a wave over head high but have still had a couple fun sessions.
I surfed the Oakley pro junior a few days ago and managed to make it up to round of 16 along with Chad du toit. Right now the wqs is on, and i managed to make my first heat so I am stoked.

hey everyone
I just got home from J-Bay where i got to go to Port Elizabeth to watch a Fifa World cup game where Portugal played Ivory coast. The match was a draw but it was still an awesome experience. While we were there, we also scored some fun waves at supers.

Tomorrow morning i am leaving with Alan van Gysen, Jason Hearn and Matthew Bromley down the west coast to find some waves, film and hopefully get a couple sik shots.

cheers

Rain__rain__rain_

hey__
It’s been raining on and off for for a couple of days…winter in the mother city. Perfect conditions to use my new quiky cypher heated vest. It’s cool (in a warm way)- it warms you kidneys and as your blood circulates, it warms you up! I reckon they definitely had long beach or the dunes in mind when they came up with this concept!
thanks quiksilver.
cheers everyone…

In the beginning …

by Michael February on May.20, 2010, under General

_hey everyone____

Besides the fact that I am busy with exams it has been a pretty fun week for me. On Sunday i had a really rad surf on one of Jono Huthisons new Helayer surfboards. If you dont know what it is , it is like a long shaped piece of wood. When I first looked at it I thought my dad was joking, but when I got a couple of waves it was the best thing ever. It was weird to think that it was what they used to surf in the very beginning.

Other than that I have just gotten some new boards from Jono and only have one more exam tomorrow!!!! =)

EASTbeach Perfection

by Michael February on May.02, 2010, under General

hey hey
After a long drive I am finally back at home. I was in Port Alfred for the Oakley pro junior comp. We had some really amazing waves at Port Alfred’s Eastern beach. I managed to make it to the semi finals and got an equal 3rd. This is my best result in un20 so far so i was really stoked. At the end the contest was won by Shaun Joubert with Chad Du Toit in a close second.

So yeah it was a fun trip and just happy to be home for a while.

Yesterday morning i went for a session out at crayfish factory. It has been a while since i’ve been out in the big stuff.
I went with my dads friend who is quite the local charger out at the factory so i felt pretty safe. We arrived to some misty crayfish factory at 7 in the morning with about 10 people out in the lineup. It was pretty clean and glassy with one or two 8 foot plus sets charging through. I was ridding a friends 7’6 gun so i got into waves pretty easily.

For my second time out at the factory i think I did pretty well. With the swell that we are having at cape town at the moment, I might just have another go out there pretty soon.

keeping you posted

GROMSEARCH__FINAL____

by Michael February on Apr.05, 2010, under General

Rip Curl Gromsearch international final.

For the past week i have been competing in the Rip Curl international gromsearch final held at Bells beach in Victoria, Australia. The contest consisted of 16 international boys and girls from all over the world. The contest was held during the WCT men and women’s Rip Curl Pro. We were given the chance to watch the Pro’s and even surf with a couple of them in our free surfs.

Unfortunately I did not do to great in the contest as i got knocked out in the second round in some tricky Bells beach conditions. The boys devision was won by Gabriel Medina who was ripping and competing in both the gromsearch and WCT main event.

One of the highlights had to be Bianca who won the girls gromsearch final.

Other then my loss in the second round I had a good time learning and having some fun with the other international kids. During the lay-days of the contest we got to surf some fun spots on the Victorian coast and also enjoyed the Rip Cur music festival.

Im flying home tomorrow morning so just keen to see my family and friends.

Ill post some pics so that you can see what went down

PEACE_____________

HEY
Got some amazing waves at Elands bay this past weekend. We were staying about an hour away in Paternoster so we had to leave at about 5am every morning to get some waves before all the crowds came out. I had never had the wave really good before so I was hoping that this weekend would be the one. On Saturday morning we didn’t get what we had hoped for but it was still a fun surf with only my dad, I and some dolphins out with the odd running 2 foot sets.
Sunday was the day! We got there at about 6am with 4-5 feet perfect Elands. Surfed for about 4 hours, getting so many long lefts. My dad didn’t surf but he got some awesome shots. It was the best way to end off the weekend.
Stoked. I finally surfed banging Elands bay.

Mr price Open

by Michael February on Mar.11, 2010, under General

Last weekend we had the Mr price Open held in my home town, KOMMETJIE.
The comp wasn’t the only event for me that weekend.
I don’t know how but on Friday i got invited to go to one of my best friends Matric dance. I got to rock out in a black suite complete with a tie and all. It was a pretty sik evening from rolling in a black Chrysler to the dance ,to one banger after party.
Despite getting back at early hours of the next morning, i managed to get one or two good waves in my heats with some fun 2-3 foot waves rolling into long beach.
The final day was a good day to be in the water as it was one of the hottest days in Cape Town this year so far. I ended up getting a fourth in the U20′s and a 5th in the open division. So… overall it was a good weekend for me…Stoked!
I have had a couple days at school just finishing up the work for the term. The family and I are leaving to Paternoster tomorrow for one chilled weekend.
My dad, brother and I are also hoping to sneak off to
Elands Bay about an hour away for one or two surfs. Looking forward to it…

Keep you posted.

HELLO
Just got back from a Quiksilver trip to Mozam. This was my first trip there and the first time that i was one of the youngest guys on the trip. We were expecting some really good swell to come through on the last couple days of our trip. We would wake up every morning hoping that the swell had jacked up but unfortunately it didn’t get big enough for Tofinho point to work. Otherwise everyone had some good sessions at the beach break in front of where we stayed. Overall I had a really good trip and hope to go back to Mozam soon.

At the moment i am slowly getting used to surfing in a thick wetsuit and just catching up with the big pile of school work that i missed.

Im leaving to Oz at the end of march so i will keep you updated.

cheers
