Quiksilver Rider Eric Willett, 23, came out swingng in his first run in Saturday’s men snowboard slopestyle Finals in Killington, Vermont.
On a day where a recent snow was slowing down the course, many of the havy hitters including Chas Guldemond and Mark McMorris were having trouble landing their reuns.
But not Willett, who came in with confidence and came through with his riding.
“You just got to be confortable with your riding and know what you can do and just kind of go for it and send it,” Willett said.
His first run scored a 91,00 and went like this : front 270 on down rail in the first section to gap front lip 270 out on the gap down in the second. On the third section, he went for a front board switchout on the cannon. Next up were the three jumps, and he did a switch back 10 double into a cab 9 double to finish with a front 10 double.
He’s now in third overall in the race for the Dew Cup heading into the last event in Snowbasin (UT).

Beyrick de Vries and Sarah Baum advance directly to Round 3 in Billabong World Junior Champs.
by admin on Jan.23, 2012, under General, News, Surf
Beyrick De Vries (Umhlanga) did the South African contingent at the Billabong World Junior Surfing Championships on Australia’s Gold Coast proud by finding some decent scoring rides in the tricky, wind affected afternoon conditions at Burleigh Heads point to win his opening heat.
De Vries, 19, defeated Brazilian Lucas Silveira and fellow South African Dylan Lightfoot (ZAF), who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, and advanced directly to Round 3 of the third and final event on the 2011 ASP World Junior Tour where the annual ASP World Junior Champions will be decided.
“It’s so important to win that first round heat because you get to skip Round 2,” De Vries said. “This point-break is quite different to others so I’m stoked that my board was feeling good in that heat. Now I’ll have even more time to figure out what boards and fins work best out here. It also gives me more time to get over the jet lag, I’m still waking up at 3am every morning.”
The event got underway in pristine one metre (hip to head high) waves on the first day of the nine day waiting period with contest director Luke Egan having no hesitation in putting Round 1 of the men into action.
The three other South Africans in the men’s draw were all relegated to cutthroat, man-on-man Round 2 encounters where the winner advances to join the Round 1winners in Round 3 and the loser is eliminated from the event in equal 33rd place overall.
David van Zyl (Glenashley), the replacement for Shaun Joubert (Mossel Bay), who has moved to California, in the ASP Africa men’s squad, placed third in his heat. Fifth seed Dale Staples (St Francis Bay) was winning his match-up with 45 seconds remaining when Jack Robinson (AUS), at 14 the youngest and arguably the smallest competitor in the event, produced an incredible full-rotation ‘alley-oop’ aerial manoeuvre to lock in an excellent score and snatch victory.
Michael February (Kommetjie) waged a heat-long battle against former neighbor and now Australian citizen Thomas Woods with the Aussie prevailing when the siren sounded to end the heat.
Sarah Baum (ZAF) was the talk of the town today after starring in the last heat of Round 1. The young lady from Durban, South Africa used her powerful backhand attack to post the highest heat total of the event thus far – 18.53 (out of a possible 20).
“I surf rights most of the time so I’ve got a strong backhand,” Baum said. “I also think this wave is easy to surf on your backhand because you can get right in the pocket. I was nervous going into this event, but now I’m feeling confident after that 9.93 (out of a possible 10). I was so excited when I paddled into that wave and saw it double up, it allowed me to do a big fins-free turn and that set me up for a great wave.”
Mike February testing his new boards…

The name Mikey February has been mentioned for many years in SA surfing circles, which makes it that much harder to believe that the Kommetjie local is still only eighteen years-old. In the meantime check out this clip of Mikey shredding on a new stick around home.

DOUBLE VICTORY AS QUIKSILVER’S KELLY SLATER WINS 11TH ASP WORLD TITLE
by Quiksilver Media on Nov.08, 2011, under News, Surf
Quiksilver’s Kelly Slater secured his 11th ASP World Title today at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. Slater, who was erroneously awarded the title last Wednesday, November 2, personally uncovered a mathematical error proving that he had not yet won and immediately reported his findings to the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals). Slater’s discovery confirmed that he still would need to compete in the final rounds of the Rip Curl ProSearch San Francisco this weekend in an attempt to clench the World Title, which he did in round #4 today against Gabriel Medina and Miguel Pupo.
Remarking on his decision to announce the calculations error to the ASP and fans, Slater remarked: “The decision was pretty easy. That’s why it’s a cliché. You know, your parents always tell you that honesty is the best policy. I just figured that instead of letting any more seconds or minutes pass, with me knowing that, that it was best just to say it. At that point I felt hugely relieved. It stressed me out to know that and not have other people know it.”
“I put together what I thought was a pretty good heat today—it wasn’t spectacular but those waves are hard to ride and hard to pick. It will be fun to go to Pipe and just relax and have fun.”
Slater, 39, is the first surfer to achieve 11 ASP World Titles, an accomplishment spanning two decades of an astounding career during which he has dominated competitive surfing as both the youngest and oldest ASP World Champion. Despite missing July’s South Africa event and being challenged by a new field of opponents, Slater has had an impressive run in 2011, posting threevictories: Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast (Australia), Billabong Pro Tahiti and the Hurley Pro at Trestles, Calif. He also secured two Runner-Up finishes at the Quiksilver Pro New York and the Rip Curl Pro Portugal – a season-longperformance, in part, he attributes to the relief of clinching his 10th ASPWorld Title last season.
Slater won his previous ASPWorld Championships in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010. His career victories also include 48 elite tour wins and two ESPN X Games gold medals.
